CHENNAI, OCT. 15. It is now the turn of Tamil Nadu and in particular of Chennai to host the second leg of the India-ASEAN business summit. The third summit of the captains of industry and trade from India and Southeast Asia is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on October 19. The second day's focus will shift to Chennai, where Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will open the plenary session. The first India-ASEAN business summit was shared between Delhi and Hyderabad, while the second was split between Delhi and Mumbai. This year, it is up to Tamil Nadu to market itself and woo potential investors as well as trade.
Areas of focus
Jointly organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Chennai session will look at agriculture and food processing, Information and IT-enabled services, health care and pharmaceuticals, and the engineering and manufacturing sectors. According to official sources here, Tamil Nadu has always been the major focus of the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) countries and a number of business partnerships are already in place. A clutch of firms from Singapore and Malaysia has also invested in the State and is keen on enhancing its presence here.
