Siddipet result by 11 a.m. today

Sangareddy: Results of the Siddipet Assembly byelection are expected by 11 a.m. on Saturday. Counting will begin at 8 a.m. and official declaration is expected around 3 p.m. The electronic voting machines used in 187 polling booths are stored at the Government High School adjacent to the Karimnagar road. A strong contingent of police is guarding the strongroom.

PCC chief complains against

PJR, Mukesh, two others

Hyderabad: The PCC president, D. Srinivas, has lodged a written complaint to the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi, against two Congress MLAs and corporators of the city for their anti-party activity. Mr. Srinivas is said to have complained that P. Janardhan Reddy (Khairatabad) and M. Mukesh (Maharajgunj) along with their followers, Madhu and Mohan (corporators) worked against the party's official candidate, D. Nagender, in the Asifnagar byelection. The quartet worked in favour of the rival TDP candidate, he has reportedly stated.

4 panchaloha idols recovered

KARIMNAGAR: The police recovered four antique panchaloha idols - all weighing 17 kilograms and worth Rs. 1 crore -- on Friday morning. At a press conference here, Rajiv Ratan, SP, said the town CI, J. Amarender Reddy along with the One Town SI, A. Mahesh, and others apprehended two persons when they were moving under suspicious circumstances at the bypass road on the outskirts of the town and recovered the idols. The idols of Lord Rama, Laxmana, Krishna and Goda Devi were of 700 years old. The accused persons - Shaga Kanakaiah (40)and Velpula Ramulu (45) -- were planning to dispose of the idols in Hyderabad.

`Explosion' in car: one hurt

VISAKHAPATNAMM: One person, Koyya Chandrasekhar Reddy (38), of Kothavalasa in Vizianagaram was injured in an `explosion' in a stationary car at the busy Dwarakanagar junction here on Friday evening. Following the commotion and traffic jam, a traffic home guard on duty rushed the person to a nearby hospital where his condition is said to be stable.At first it was thought to be an explosion caused by a cellphone but the police ruled out that possibility. Mr. Reddy, who runs a medical shop and travel agency, said something was hurled at him while he was sitting in the back seat of the car. He denied he had enemies who could have been behind the attack. The IV Town SI (Law and Order), Lakshmana Rao, said the blast was not caused by a bomb but must be something like a cracker.

4 Directors appointed for Genco

Hyderabad: Four Directors were appointed by the Government to Andhra Pradesh Genco on Friday. They were: D. Prabhakar Rao, Director (Finance), Adiseshu (Hydel), Vijaya Kumar (Thermal) and Krishnamurthy (Civil). The latter three were working as Chief Engineers in the corporation.

NTPC-IOC deal on fuel depot

VISAKHAPATNAM: A memorandum of understanding was signed here on Friday by the Simhadri Thermal Power Project (STPP) of National Thermal Power Corporation and the Indian Oil Corporation to set up a fuel depot at STPP. The IOC would maintain a stock of 800 kilolitres of fuel at NTPC Simhadri plant in Parawada.

Brahmotsavam fete on AIR

TIRUPATI: All India Radio (AIR) will broadcast a running commentary on select events during the nine-day Navaratri Brahmotsavam at Tirumala. A running commentary by Annamacharya Project Director, Medasani Mohan, and scholars -- S. Venkata Sarma and A. Vibheeshana Sarma -- will be broadcast from 9.16 p.m. to 11 p.m. on October 18 when the `Garuda Seva' will be observed. A commentary on `Rathotsavam' will be broadcast on October 21 from 7.30 a.m. to 9.05 a.m. They would be relayed by all stations in the State, the AIR Programme Executive, A. Malleswara Rao, said in a release on Friday.

Book on celestial carriers out

TIRUPATI: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has brought out a book on the significance of celestial carriers (vahanams) during Brahmotsavam. The book, authored by Samudrala Lakshmanaiah and Akella Vibhishana Sharma, will be distributed free of cost to 50,000 devotees waiting in the specially-erected galleries encircling the shrine to have a glimpse of the Lord's procession. The 32-page book throws light on the `vahanams' belonging to various dynasties and the significance of the sequence observed.

Thousands congregate at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: On the second day of the ongoing nine-day annual Navaratri Brahmotsavams of Lord Venkateswara here, the processional deity of Lord Malayappa Swamy, mounted atop the `Chinna Sesha Vahanam,' was taken out in a grand procession this morning. Thousands of devotees congregated along the processional path to have a glimpse of the spectacular event. The air was charged with the chants of `Govinda' namam by the devotees.

`Peeved' ryot ends life CUDDAPAH: A farmer, Mukkara Ganganna (48), of Sogalapalle village in Pendlimarry mandal, committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Friday on being allegedly insulted by some persons demanding repayment of his debt.

A Dalit, Ganganna, who owed repayment of Rs. 20,000 to one Subbarao Setty, is suspected to have resorted to the extreme step, peeved at being manhandled a couple of days ago by the persons who fixed Friday as deadline for repayment, according to the police.

Ganganna lodged a complaint in the SP's grievance cell before ending his life in fields near Dasaripalle.

Trough lies over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: An upper air trough lies over west central Bay off coastal Andhra on Friday, the Cyclone Warning Centre said here on Friday. Under its influence rain or thundershower is likely at a few places over coastal Andhra in next 24 hours. Machilipatnam recorded 6 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours while Gannavaram and Guntur had 5 cm rain.

Training for girl cadets

TIRUPATI: A combined annual training camp for girl cadets will be conducted at Sri Padmvathi women's college here from Oct 17 to 28.

As many as 650 girl cadets from Chittoor, Nellore and Cuddapah districts will take part in the camp, to be conducted by the 5 Andhra Girls battalion of NCC.

According to the commanding officer Lt.Col.Iqbal Singh, basic military exercises like arms drill and weapon training, unarmed combat (Karate) and adventure training in rock climbing and para-sailing would be provided to the girls.

Convicted

CUDDAPAH: The Assistant Sessions Judge of Rajampet, V.C. Gunnaiah, on Friday sentenced Bopparthi Venkatarayudu of Kodur to five years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 500 in a murder attempt case.

The Kodur police had registered a case under Section 307 IPC against Venkatarayudu for attacking and causing grievous injuries on P. Guravaiah of Kodur on February 27, 2002, and filed a chargesheet.

Dharna staged

NELLORE: In response to the call given by the National Federation of Postal Employees, a dharna was held at various post offices of Nellore district on Friday, in support of their demands. They included constitution of a sixth pay commission, filling of posts, giving up the proposal to privatise public sector units and pension facility for extra departmental staff.

Wage revision sought

CUDDAPAH: Extra-departmental employees of the Postal Department staged dharna before the Head Post Office here on Friday, demanding wage revision, lifting curbs on compassionate appointments and payment of pension.

Addressing the protesters, the All-India Postal ED Employees Association president, Subbarayudu, demanded implementation of the Talwar Committee recommendations and scrapping of another committee report to prune the postal employee strength.

Review meet conducted

MADANAPALLE: `Food security scheme' will be launched shortly in drought-affected areas of Chittoor district, according to the district Collector, S. S. Rawat. He addressed a review meeting at the Jiddu Krishnamurthy municipal town hall. Under this scheme, percolation tanks, supply channels and approach roads would be taken up.

MADANAPALLE: The Madanapalle Bar Association has conducted a meeting on the occasion of felicitation to Senior Civil Judge (Sub-Jude), N. Malayadri. Journalist and Padmasri awardee Thurlapati Kutumba Rao was the chief guest. Mr. Malyadri presented a cheque to the Bar Association, and to the judicial staff another cheque. Shawl and memento were presented to Mr. Turlapati.
