TENALI, (GUNTUR DIST.), OCT. 15. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday used the public meeting platform here to placate the detractors of the Pulichintala multipurpose project, for which he performed the Bhoomi Puja signifying the launching of the works. The `tail-pond' project, which was being shown as an alternative to the Pulichintala project by the people's organisations including the CPI (Maoist), erstwhile People's War, would be constructed, the Chief Minister told the farmers from the Krishna delta who had gathered here for the meeting.
Criticises TDP
He criticised the Telugu Desam Government for its failure to protect the farmers' interests and indulging only in publicity campaigns for schemes, which were not useful for the people. "They are, however, growing restless when our Government is slowly but steadily taking up all the projects promised before elections," Dr. Reddy said. Reeling out the list of welfare measures taken by the new Government, he said while it had allocated funds for the new projects, the process was on to tie up with funding agencies for the major projects, but the TDP does not have patience, he added. The Minister for Major Irrigation, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, said that for the first time the Government had come up with a definite compensation package of Rs.150 crores, which would be disbursed as part of the relief and rehabilitation measure in the next nine months.
Arrives late
The Chief Minister arrived one hour behind schedule to a warm welcome from the people, but they had to stand in ankle-deep mud in the ground of the VSR-NVR College due to the rain last night. The Fire Department personnel led by its fire officer, K.Satyanarayana, drained out water from morning. There were no protests or black flags anywhere near the meeting venue, though some resistance was expected.
