Call for 'multi-national spiritual tourism'

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD, OCT. 15. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, today suggested that India develop "multi-national spiritual tourism" along with countries such as Nepal and Thailand.

Mr. Kalam regretted that India did not figure among the top 30 tourist destinations in the world but said that was no reason to feel disheartened. India had a lot of potential to develop tourism, and if the path shown by Gujarat in promoting "festival tourism" was emulated by other States, it could help in attracting foreign tourists.

Dr. Kalam was inaugurating an international seminar on tourism, a theme pavilion and an exhibition organised as part of the `Vibrant Gujarat' celebrations to promote the State's `Garba festivities, Navratri.' The festivities are being promoted as the "world's longest dance festival." The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, L. K. Advani, the Governor, Nawal Kishore Sharma, and the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, were present on the occasion.

Mr. Kalam underlined the need for "a clean environment and clean water." He listed power generation among the infrastructural facilities that required improvement.
