CHENNAI, OCT. 15. Some 1200 fishermen from Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram district were arrested today in north Chennai for violating regulatory orders. They were released in the evening. Fishermen and women from Kasimedu, Royapuram, Tondiarpet, Pazhaverkadu in Tiruvallur district and Mahabalipuram in Kancheepuram district had planned to take out a procession to the Secretariat to highlight their demands, including ban on sale of fish from outside the State in the city, abolition of sales tax on diesel purchased by them and road tax. The fishermen, who gathered at the fishing harbour jetty in Kasimedu, to take out a procession were arrested shortly after started their march. The fishermen's action committee had earlier announced that they would go on an indefinite strike from today. The fishermen and women started arriving at the venue from 9.30 a.m. Carrying placards, they raised slogans against the Government for its failure to fulfil their demands. S. Venugopal, an office-bearer of the action committee, led the protest.
