Beauty tip for city - go green

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, OCT. 15. Business and educational institutions, voluntary organisations and other civil society organisations have been asked to do their bit for the development of greenery in the city. The Municipal Commissioner, V. Usharani, in a statement on Friday said that this was the best season for tree plantation programmes. She lauded the residents of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Colony for taking up tree plantation programmes on August 15.

Green belts

She said the Municipal Corporation could beautify G. S. Raju Road and C. K. Reddy Road by developing green belts between the roads and the Eluru Canal.

Park committees were being formed for the maintenance and protection of over 50 parks in the city, she said. All should take up tree plantation to make the city a better place to live in. This was not difference between rich and poor in this regard.Women from below the poverty line were taking initiative to develop greenery voluntarily, she said.

She urged all organisations interested in developing greenery in the city to register with the Municipal Corporation. Assistant Director of Horticulture (VMC), A. V. S. V. Jamadagni, said the municipal corporation had taken up tree planting on a large-scale and has planted 5,600 saplings and arranged tree guards for their protection. As many as 100 park committees were planned to develop greenery by year-end, he said. A slab system had been developed to pay the committees for maintaining the parks.

VMC site

The Commissioner has issued orders to protect a vacant site near the Raavi Chettu Centre in Mougalrajpuram. She ordered the fencing of the vacant site to prevent its encroachment.
