VIJAYAWADA, OCT. 15. Thousands of devotees on Friday visited the Kankadurgamma temple atop the Indrakeeladari hill on the first day of the "Navarathri festival" festival which commenced here amid religious fervour and gaiety. Women waited patiently for hours to have the darshan of the Goddess who was adorned as "Balatripurasundari devi." A replica of the idol was taken around the temple amid Vedic chants and special prayers. Hundreds of couples offered "kumkum archana" on the auspicious occasion. The celebrations formally commenced with a suprabhatam at 3 a.m followed by "Snapanabhishekham" at 4.am. Though the temple gates were opened at 3 am devotees from different parts of the State gathered outside the temple right from midnight. The city police made tight security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
