Rain likely

Forecast: A spell of rain or thundershowers likely. At Waltair, the maximum temperature was 32.0 deg. C and the minimum was 25.4 deg. C respectively on Friday. Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 71 per cent and at 5.30 p.m. was 78 per cent. At Airport, the maximum and minimum temperatures were 34.4 deg. C and 26.0 deg. C respectively. Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 69 per cent and at 5.30 p.m. was 71 per cent. Rainfall up to 8.30 a.m. was traced. The maximum and minimum temperatures at the Dolphin's Nose were 31.8 deg. C and 23.1 deg. C respectively. Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 75 per cent.

Dasara fete

The APSEB Colony in Seethammadhara is organising its ninth annual Dasara festival at the Chalasani Narayana Rao Community Hall. According to the colony's welfare association president, G. Satyanarayana Murthy, daily pujas and cultural programmes will be held during the nine-day period. There would be community lunch on October 24.

Exemption

for shops

On a request from the Vizagapatam Cloth Merchants Association, the Deputy Labour Commissioner, M.N. Varahala Reddy, has issued orders relaxing working hours of shops within the framework of rules during the Dasara festival. The relaxation is subject to conditions that no worker is allowed to work for over 12 hours and that he or she be paid overtime wages of twice the normal wages for the period, no worker should work for more than 13 hours including the interval period and a compensatory holiday given to every worker within one month after the period of exemption is over. Also, no shop should be kept open after 9.30 p.m.

Consumer expo

The Mayor, Rajana Ramani, inaugurated a mega consumer exhibition --Home Ideas- 2004 -- being organised by Idea Events at the Viswapriya Function hall here on Friday. Major brands like Videocon, Usha, LG, Samsung, Kores, TTK and Karnataka Soaps are showcasing their products at the stalls put up at the exhibition. A few foreign companies are also participating.

Ex-Registrar

for Italy

The space physicist and former Registrar of Andhra University, P.V.S. Rama Rao, and his research colleagues -- K. Niranjan, D.S.V.V.D. Prasad and S. Gopi Krishna -- have been invited to participate in the five-day conference on International Beacon Satellite Symposium (IBSS) 2004 to be held at Trieste (Italy), where they will present their research papers on ionospheric studies over the Indian sub-continent. Prof. Rao, who is the co-convener of the scientific committee, will chair the inaugural session.

Thengadi mourned

The district unit of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) mourned the sudden demise of its founder, Dattopant Thengadi, who died in Pune on Thursday. In a statement here on Friday, its president, K. Bhavani Shankarudu, recalled the services of Dr. Thengadi, who was also the founder of other frontal organisations of RSS like the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch, Bharatiya Kisan Sangh and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.
