Insurance employees stage dharna

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI, OCT. 15. Members of the General Insurance Employees' Union (Southern Zone) staged a day-long dharna in front of the regional office of the United India Insurance Company here today pressing for various demands.

The general secretary, N.D. Sundaresan, led the protest. The agitators urged the Centre to give up its move to increase foreign direct investment in insurance sector from 26 per cent to 46 per cent. Foreign investor would work only with profit motive and would not invest the profit for the country's infrastructure, unlike nationalised insurance companies. The union was conducting protests to create an awareness among the general public of the ill-effects of the increased FDI.

"The multi-national companies will not serve the rural poor but only target at the creamy layer of the society," he said. Besides, the union wanted the Centre to merge all four general insurance public sector companies into one corporation.

Among other demands were resumption of negotiation on wage revision and immediate announcement of annual promotional vacancies.

The union district president, R. Madhavan, and the secretary, M. Manoharan, participated.
