Temperature

MADURAI, OCT. 15. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 32.3 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.4 degrees Celsius.

Water level

The level in the Periyar dam stood at 118 feet with an inflow of 1617 cusecs and a discharge of 975 cusecs.

The level in the Vaigai dam was 50.46 feet with an inflow of 1698 cusecs and a discharge of 30 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit was 4038 mcft.

Mayiladumparai recorded the highest rainfall of 80.2 mm in the last 24 hours in the region, followed by Kuppanampatti — 67, Manjalar dam — 48, Andipatti (Theni) — 46.4, Periyar dam and Veerapandi — 42 mm each, Tekkadi — 32, Shanmuganadi — 31, Marudhanadi — 30, Bodinayackanur — 26, Thaniyamangalam — 23, Melur — 16, Uthamapalayam and Vaigai dam — 14, Periyakulam — 12, Gudalur — 10, Andipatti (Madurai) — 7, Pulipatti — 5, Sathaiyar dam — 3.2, Mettupatti and Madurai — 2 mm each and Peranai — 1,

Power shutdown

There will be no power supply in the following areas between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on Saturday, owing to the maintenance work to be carried out at the Tiruppalai sub-station: Tiruppalai, Narayanapuram, Athikulam, Valluvar Nagar, Viswanathapuram, Mahatma Gandhi Nagar, Anaiyur, Mudakkathan, Kulamangalam, Krishnapuram Colony, Bibikulam, Maruthupandian Nagar, Meenakshipuram, Singarayar Colony, Oomachikulam, Alanganallur, Sugar Mill, Valayapatti, Senthamangalam, Narasingam, Uthangudi, Manmalaimedu, Alagarkoil Road, Union Club, Kamala Nagar, Collector's Office, Dr. Thangaraj Road, D.R.O. Jail for four excise officials

A Central Bureau of Investigation court today awarded two-year imprisonment to four officials of the Department of Central Excise for their involvement in cheating the Government to the tune of Rs.10 lakhs by way of duty evasion.

According to prosecution, Tiruvettai, Jayakumar, Ramakrishnan and Jeyachandrapandi had conspired with one Rajamanickam, a mill-owner in Nilakottai, to evade excise duty to the tune of Rs.10 lakhs in 2000-2001.

When the case came up for hearing, the Judge, N. Athinathan, also imposed a fine of Rs. 15000 each. Rajamanickam was sentenced to undergo imprisonment for two years with a fine of Rs.10,000.
