Pulpwood trees to be grown on varsity land

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, OCT. 15. Bharathidasan University has entered into a tie-up with the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) for a joint project to plant pulpwood trees on 500 acres on the university south campus.

The university will get 45 per cent of the profit from the sale of trees, and the rest will go to the TNPL.

The TNPL will bear the cost of clonal seedlings, planting and harvesting, while the university will provide land and water. Every five years, the trees will be cut for being used at the TNPL factory in Karur district. The TNPL will pay the rate fixed by the Government for Eucalyptus debarked pulpwood. It will hand over 45 per cent of the value of the pulpwood to the university within 90 days of harvest. The agreement is valid for 15 years.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu, the project is the result of the university's desire to exploit the vacant land, which it might not require for about 15 years. After an inspection and survey of the land, the TNPL agreed to take part in the project.

The TNPL will also pay all applicable taxes, except the land revenue.

The firewood — rejects after extraction of pulpwood below two-inch girth — generated from the plantation will be auctioned, and the revenue shared in the same proportion.

The TNPL, he said, would protect the trees from illegal felling, disease and cattle grazing until they were harvested.
