BANGALORE, OCT. 15. The railway overpass at Lingarajapuram is expected to be opened to traffic on Saturday, but the residents of the area are none too happy. "Having waited so long, we thought the authorities will do a thorough job, but what we have been given is less than what we expected,'' they said. The general secretary of the Citizens' Rights Protection Council, Lingarajapuram, S. Khan, said work had not been done on building or relocating the service roads, sanitation, water pipes and street lights under the overpass. The water pipes and electricity cables were now running through a two-foot-deep manhole, which was also the conduit for sewage pipes. The streetlights and disconnected water lines were yet to be restored, other residents said. The overpass had pipes for diverting rainwater, but they were not yet connected at the ground level. What is worrying the residents most is what will happen to the old railway crossing, now directly under the overpass. "There should still be a manned gate for the safety of pedestrians who have to cross the railway tracks, and they may include physically challenged persons and schoolchildren not accompanied by adults." On Saturday, the residents plan to hold a peaceful dharna near the railway bridge "to register their disappointment."
