COLOMBO, OCT. 16. As part of its long term plans to emerge as an international long-distance carrier for Indian telecommunication traffic, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) today launched voice traffic between Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and SLT through the Indo-Sri Lanka microwave link. The link was established between Talaimannar in Sri Lanka and Rameswaram on the Tamil Nadu coast in India after an agreement between SLT and the BSNL last October, "to handle regional traffic and make Sri Lanka a business hub in South Asia," the Indian High Commission in Colombo said, announcing the launch of the voice traffic link. In addition to lower costs of telecom services, high quality connectivity is an advantage from the microwave link. The two operators BSNL and SLT had also agreed this August to "initiate the construction of a submarine cable" which "will cater to voice and data requirements between the two countries and within SAARC". The submarine cable is also expected to increase the connectivity of BSNL and would create substantial amount of bandwidth.
