ANANTAPUR, OCT. 16. The APCC secretary and former legislator, P. Venugopal Reddy, has condemned the remarks TDP leaders made against the Congress Government at the latter's dharna yesterday. Talking to newspersons here today, he alleged that the TDP had forgotten the farmers for nine years but was now making a noise about them. In contrast, the Congress Government had taken up several welfare measures for the farmers in just five months. It gave them free power, waived their dues, took up several irrigation projects and got the pilot project for development of minor irrigation sources, Mr. Reddy stated. The TDP, when in power, had incurred huge external loans but did not take up or complete any irrigation project. On the TDP charge of not fulfilling the promise of input subsidy the APCC leader said their efforts in this area continued.
Repairs to canal
He accused the TDP of neglecting the farmers by not taking up repairs to Tungabhadra (HLC) canal and denying the farmers even the available water for the last couple of years. But, the Congress Government had released Rs. 10 crores immediately after coming to power and got emergency repairs done to get the allocated water. The PCC leader suggested that the TDP to stop mud-slinging and instead act as a constructive opposition to help the people get more from the Government.
