KARAIKUDI, OCT. 16. Madras University took the title defeating last year's runner-up, Calicut 76-53 in the last match of the semifinal round robin league in the South Zone inter-university (men's) basketball tournament here on Friday night. Madras had an all-win record in the league, while Calicut lost only to Madras. Bangalore finished third with its only win (98-79) over Anna, which finished last losing all the three matches. The four teams have qualified for the All India inter-zonal tournament to be held by Utkal University at Bhubaneswar from November 7 to 10.
Dr. P. Kanniappan, Vice-Chancellor, Alagappa University gave away the prizes.
The results: Madras 76 (Amarnath Gopi 22, Prusothkumar 18) bt Calicut 53 (Hareesh 19, R. Manoj 18); Bangalore 98 (Sanat 28, Varun 24) bt Anna 79 (Raphal Dennis 22, Muthukumar 20).
