MANGALORE, OCT. 16. The State Government has chalked out a plan to develop bio-villages in all districts to promote organic farming and organic products with the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Under the plan, 100 hectares of land would be identified in the chosen village in each district, sources told The Hindu . Apart from promoting organic farming, the other objectives of the project included producing organic products and developing a market for them. Sources said the Government had reserved Rs. 8 crores in the budget for the promotion of organic farming. It had held a meeting with representatives of the NGOs actively involved in the promotion of organic farming to discuss the possibility of developing organic villages. Applications were invited from the NGOs interested in participating in the project. Of the 240 applicants, a few had been chosen to implement the project. Among them are Varanashi Research Foundation, Adyanadkka, Dakshina Kannada; Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP), Dharmasthala; and BAIF Institute for Rural Development, Tiptur, Tumkur District. The Varanashi Research Foundation has been chosen for Dakshina Kannada and the SKDRDP for Udupi. The Government is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with them soon. Sources said that the services of the departments of Sericulture, Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary, Watershed and Forestry would be utilised for the project. There would be a nodal officer in each district to monitor the project. There would be three persons to monitor and coordinate the project. Of them, one would be a facilitator and the others agricultural graduates or experienced farmers. The NGOs should approve their names before appointment. The Government would pay them.
