KABUL, OCT. 17. The Interim leader Hamid Karzai was on course on Sunday to become Afghanistan's first popularly elected leader, as results poured in from its landmark vote for president. Mr. Karzai's lead in early returns from the Oct. 9 ballot strengthened just as anti-Government militants re-surfaced with attacks which killed two U.S. soldiers and five Afghan civilians. Of 344,000 votes tallied by Saturday evening, Mr. Karzai, the U.S.-backed favourite, had captured 71 per cent, though the preliminary result was based on only 4.2 per cent of the ballots cast. Final results are expected at the end of October, though it should be clear who has won within days and whether the victor secures the majority needed to avoid a run-off. Mr. Karzai condemned an assault on Friday in eastern Kunar province in which a truck was set on fire and then a remote-controlled bomb detonated, killing at least three children and a policeman. He described it as a terrorist atrocity committed by ``enemies of Islam.''
U.S. soldiers killed
The U.S. military said a homemade bomb hit an American Humvee jeep on patrol in the southern province of Uruzgan on Thursday, killing two soldiers and wounding three others, one of them critically. There was also an attack on Kabul, with four rockets landing in the capital on Saturday evening. Three struck houses near the airport, injuring one woman, police and residents said. While polling day, October 9, was mostly peaceful despite threats by Taliban rebels to sabotage the vote, their insurgency still simmers, particularly in the lawless south and east.
