Information kiosks

MYSOREHUBLICHITRADURGAMANGALOREMANGALORE, OCT. 17OCT. 17.OCT. . The Mysore Visitor Information Centre (MVIC) has set up three information kiosks at key entry points into Mysore on Hunsur Road, Ooty Road and Bangalore Road. According to a statement, each kiosk has been attractively designed and made of bamboo by local artisans. They are manned by volunteers who will provide information on the city and Dasara events. The MVIC Dasara 2004 information kiosk in front of Kadur Inn on Hunsur Road, Mysore, will be inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Naik, and the MUDA Commissioner, Pankaj Pandey, on Monday.

School bags shield

MYSOREHUBLICHITRADURGAMANGALOREMANGALORE, OCT. 17OCT. 17.OCT. The Railway High School, Hubli, won the shield for overall performance in the three-day district rally held by the Bharat Scouts and Guides of the Hubli Division of South Western Railway here on Saturday. The school also won the quiz competition for Scouts and Guides. The second place went to the Hyderabad Division. In the Rovers and Rangers group, the Hubli and Vijayawada divisions occupied the first two slots. Bhagat Singh crew of Hubli bagged the overall performance shield among the Rovers. The shields to the winners and runners-up were given by Anita Mainrai, President of South Western Zone Women's Organisation of the Hubli Division; K.D. Mainrai, Divisional Railway Manager. Hubli, and A.V. Sivaprasad, Additional Divisional Manager and Chief Commissioner of Bharat Scouts and Guides of the division.

Award for AIR staffer

Balan, Programme Executive, All India Radio, Chitradurga, has won the London Wild Screen Award, popularly known as Green Oscar, for his documentary, Eighteenth Elephant -3 monologues, according to sources. The documentary depicts the plight of elephants in the captivity. The sources said the documentary got the award for its narration by Mr. Balan's wife, Radha Balan, a painter and scriptwriter.

Sri Sharada Mahotsava

The Sarvajanika Sri Sharada Mahotsava Samiti and Sri Sharada Seva Trust, Suratkal, will organise Saravajanika Sri Sharada Mahotsava at Suratkal near here on October 22 and 23. P. Sriram Rao, president of the samiti, told presspersons on Saturday that the organisers conducted various competitions for primary and high school students last month in connection with the mahotsava. They had also organised a bhajan anthakshari competition for the first time. The winners of these competitions would receive prizes on October 22.

KSRTC buses for Dasara

MYSOREHUBLICHITRADURGAMANGALOREMANGALORE, OCT. 17OCT. 17.OCT. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will run special buses from Mangalore to Mysore for Dasara. A press release issued here said the buses would leave for Mysore and Bangalore directly from Mangalore and also from Dharmasthala, Puttur, Sullia, Udupi and Buntwal.

`Declare Kolar drought-hit'

MYSOREHUBLICHITRADURGAMANGALOREMANGALORE, OCT. 17OCT. 17.OCT. The district administration has decided to recommend to the State Government to declare Kolar district as drought-hit. The district in-charge and Agriculture Minister, K. Srinivasa Gowda, disclosed this at a Karnataka Development Programme meeting here on Saturday. Stating that the district was reeling under drought, the Minister said 169 villages faced water shortage. The matter had been brought to the notice of the Government. The district administration had taken steps to ease the drinking water crisis in the district, he added.
