Nine Iraqi policemen killed in ambush

KARBALA (IRAQ), OCT. 17. Nine Iraqi policemen returning from a training course in Jordan have been ambushed and killed on their way home to Karbala, police said on Sunday.

The bus they were travelling in was attacked on Saturday in the militant hotbed of Latifiyah, 40 km south of Baghdad, said the Karbala police.

He said the attackers escaped the scene and investigations are underway. The explosions that damaged five churches in Baghdad on Saturday have created a sense of fear and insecurity among the Christian minorities in Iraq. Some in the community have begun to wonder whether it is time to leave their ancient homeland. Many Christians skipped Mass on Sunday.

Fallujah assault

In Fallujah, U.S. forces battled militants today after two American soldiers died when their helicopters crashed south of Baghdad. Fierce clashes between U.S. troops and militants broke out on a highway east of Fallujah and in the southern part of the city, witnesses said. The road, which leads to Baghdad, has been completely blocked. Residents reported fresh aerial and artillery attacks as explosions boomed across the city.

Fallujah clerics today repeated their offer to return to the negotiating table if the U.S. stopped its bombing, while blaming the Iraqi Government for the violence.
