Their war of words comes as an amusement to the people

By Our Correspondent

KARWAR, OCT. 17. The Government has sanctioned Rs. 30 lakhs to repair the 35-km Sadashivgad-Kadra Road.

Interestingly, Ashok Naik, former President of Karwar Urban Development Authority, Gangadhar Bhat, BJP MLA, and Shubhalata Asnotikar, MLC, have been engaged in war of words each claiming credit for the sanction of the amount much to the amusement of the public.

First, it was Mr. Naik, a Congress candidate in Karwar in the last Assembly elections, who issued a statement that he with other party leaders met the Public Works secretary to impress upon him the need for repairing the road. He gave as evidence a photograph of his meeting with the Public Works secretary and asserted that the secretary had sanctioned the money.

This was followed by a statement by Mr. Bhat who said he had raised the issue in the last Assembly session and also met the official concerned in this connection.

It was because of his effort that the amount was sanctioned, he said and criticised those whom he called self-proclaimed leaders for trying to take credit.

No sooner than this statement was issued, Ms. Asnotikar came out with a similar statement explaining her correspondence and meeting with the authorities concerned to get approval for the repair work and the sanction of the amount.

She criticised the other Congress leaders for claming credit.

Mr. Naik, who held a press conference on Friday, blamed the MLA and the MLC for criticising him. If they had made any effort to get money sanctioned for the road, why did they not issue statements earlier instead of blowing their trumpets now, he asked.

The MLA took 10 days to issue a statement after his (Mr. Naik's) statement was released only to impress upon his party workers who were not happy with him. Thereafter the MLC issued her statement criticising local Congress leaders, he said.

The people here are of the opinion that they only want the road to be made fit for their use irrespective of who worked for it.
