ANANTAPUR, OCT. 17. The State secretary of the Communist Party of India, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, has hailed the victory of the Congress-NCP alliance in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, terming is as a defeat of communal forces and said that this is a welcome development for the country. Addressing a press conference here today, he opined that a wider alliance, including the Left parties, would have yielded better results in Maharashtra. The ruling alliance could have won 50 more seats if it had acted responsibly in reaching an alliance with the Left, he said. He criticised the Congress for not acting in a proper way with regard to key issues like secularism. The Congress thinks that it is the lone custodian of secularism in the country and has failed to learn its lessons from the examples in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chattisgarh Assembly elections.
Relief for people
The results of the Maharashtra elections were a relief for the people from communal forces, he observed. The Congress' victory in the by-election to two Assembly seats in Punjab was most unexpected, he said.
