BSNL to sell SIM cards in rural areas

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI, OCT. 17 . In a bid to boost the sale of `Excel' Prepaid SIM cards in rural areas of the district, the BSNL Tirunelveli Telecom Circle has decided to sell over 1,500 SIM cards in nine select areas of the district on demand.

The `privileged areas' are Veerakeralamputhur, Kadayanallur, Surandai, Paavoorchathram, Kadayam, Vickramasingapuram, Cheranmahadevi, Kalakkad and Vasudevanallur, which have already got transmission towers for mobile phone communication, the General Manager, Tirunelveli Telecom Circle, BSNL, V. Raju, said.

Aspirants living under the exchanges in the areas are eligible to apply for the Prepaid SIM cards, each costing Rs. 220.

Since there was a heavy demand for the Excel Prepaid SIM cards of the BSNL, the administration decided to maintain a `waiting list' of the aspirants. Based on the seniority in the waiting list, the SIM cards are being issued to the applicants.

However, the administration recently identified nine areas — all in rural Tirunelveli — that the sale of prepaid SIM cards was very low in these areas though these parts of the district had already been brought under BSNL mobile phone coverage. So it was decided to sell the prepaid SIM cards in these areas `on demand'.

The scheme would be in effect from October 18 to October 23, Mr. Raju said, adding that 72 more mobile phone transmission towers were coming up in various parts of the district to ensure superior coverage at every part of the district. The installation of these towers would be completed within this fiscal.

In another statement, Mr. Raju said the consumers, who used the Coin Collection Box telephones at Pettai, Melapalayam, Anbu Nagar, Shanthi Nagar, Palayamkottai and V.M. Chathram areas, can continuously speak even after 90 minutes by inserting one more one rupee coin. The facility has been now extended to Tirunelveli Junction, Shankar Nagar, Vannarpettai and NGO Colony areas having telephone numbers starting with 232, 233, 230, 250 and 255.
