CHITRADURGA, OCT. 17. G.H. Thippa Reddy, Chitradurga MLA, has called upon women to get their share in society and lauded the experiments of self-help groups (SHG) for women, "Stree Shakthi", in the State. Inaugurating the training camp in mass movement and maintenance of records for the representatives of the Stree Shakthi SHGs here on Saturday, Mr. Reddy said that he was happy with the positive effects of the programme. "Most of the government welfare schemes are reaching the target groups only because of the SHGs. Women are emboldened to question the elected representatives and officials about developmental works, as a result of which rural areas are now developing at a fast pace," he said. G. Ramadas, Director (Planning), District Town Development Cell, said that Chitradurga was among the 32 towns in the State to be included in the "Nirmala Nagara" scheme because of the efforts of Mr. Reddy. A grant of Rs. 7.50 lakhs had been released for distribution to 300 SHGs. A special grant of Rs. 5,000 will be given to groups that maintained proper records, he added. The Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, said that the activities of the SHGs in the district had attracted the attention of entire State. Women should be organised and should make best use of the government welfare schemes to become self-reliant economically, he added. Resource persons were given training kits and 10 autos were distributed to the beneficiaries on the occasion. S.S. Poorvi Mutt, manager of district Lead Bank, and K.V. Ramachandra, Municipal Commissioner, were present.
