Permit States to decide on reservation: DK meet

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUVANNAMALAI, OCT. 17. The Dravidar Awakening Conference held here yesterday has urged the Congress-led government at the Centre to introduce a Constitutional amendment permitting State Governments to determine reservation quotas.

The conference, organised by the Dravidar Kazhagam, urged the Centre to include Backward Classes in the list of categories for which it promised affirmative action for introducing reservation in the private sector in its Common Minimum Programme. (The CMP at present mentions only Scheduled Castes/Tribes).

The conference decided to organise a rally of all like-minded parties and organisations in New Delhi next month and meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to emphasise reservation in the private sector.

The conference urged the Centre and State Governments to release persons arrested under the Prevention Of Terrorism Act (POTA) and withdraw pending cases against them.

Archakas `from all castes'

DK president K. Veeramani said the DK was planning to launch a protest demanding that persons from all castes be made `archakas' in temples. Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said the reservation policies followed by the Centre and State governments were the result of efforts made by Periyar.

He wanted `self-respect marriages' to be included as valid evidence of marriage in the Hindu Succession Act, so as to validate `self-respect marriages' by persons belonging to any religion.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam treasurer Arcot N. Veerasamy said but for Periyar, most of those belonging to the SC/ST/BC/MBC would not have risen to the top.

Earlier, DK volunteers took out a procession from the Chengam Road junction to the conference venue.
