ANANTAPUR, OCT. 17. The former leader of Naxalbari in West Bengal, Kanu Sanyal, today said that he was neither supporting nor opposing the peace initiative between the two naxalite groups and the Andhra Pradesh Government. Participating in a Meet-the-Press programme organised by the district unit of the AP Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) here, he said he would comment on the peace talks only after the outcome was known.
Unity efforts
There were more unity efforts among the revolutionary parties in recent times and a meeting would be held in January on the issue. The efforts resulted in unification of five revolutionary parties, he noted. Mr. Sanyal opposed the term `naxalite' as no `naxalite' or `naxalism' existed today. "Calling the movement of parties like CPI-Maoist (formerly PW) naxalism will be wrong. Naxalites and naxalism are the creations of media," he said. They were all followers of Marxism and Leninism, he added. Plans were afoot to unite all revolutionary parties into one CPI(ML) unit at the central level, Mr. Sanyal stated. On armed struggle, he said it was a result of the Government "anti-people'' policies. He said land reforms were not implemented in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar even now and the lands distributed in West Bengal were being reclaimed by landlords. Governments were responsible for all this, he said. There was no difference between the policies of NDA and UPA as the two were extending the imperialist interests, he said.
