HYDERABAD, OCT. 17. The demand for direct elections to the post of the Chief Minister was reiterated by the Lok Satta at its annual general body here on Sunday. By another resolution, the Lok Satta demanded the passage of a draft bill, which had been submitted to the Government a year ago, for the speedy delivery of justice. It also urged the setting up of local courts for quick legal solutions. The following were elected as office-bearers at the meeting: Jayaprakash Narayan, National Coordinator, D.V.V.S. Varma, State Campaign Coordinator, B. Ankaiah, General Secretary, Kodanda Rama Rao, Training Secretary, B. Satyanarayana, Organisation Secretary, M.B.N.V.V. Prasad, Treasurer and D. Somasundar, Editor, `Janabalam', the Lok Satta's monthly magazine.
Powers to local bodies
Addressing the meeting, the National Coordinator, Jayaprakash Narayan, said there were inordinate delays in the justice delivery system in India. He advocated powers to local bodies and urged people to campaign relentlessly against corruption. Calling for radical electoral reforms, Dr. Narayan said the present system had plunged the democratic system into crisis, bringing people with criminal records into politics. "Our electoral system is outdated," he said, asking people to get rid of it. He criticised successive Governments for not giving Constitutionally guaranteed powers to local bodies.
