KANNUR, OCT. 18. Defending champion Annamalai overcame a fighting Kerala 2-1 in what could be the deciding semifinal league match in the South Zone inter-university football championship at the Police Parade Ground here on Monday. Annamalai now leads the table with six points, and looks well set to retain the title, with just one round of matches left. In the day's other match Calicut beat Bangalore 2-0. Calicut and Kerala have three points apiece, while Banagalore has yet to open its account. Kerala gave a much better fight to Annamalai than expected, especially in the opening half. It was able to rattle the formidable Annamalai defence on quite a few occasions. The holder took the lead through Pavalavannan in the 13th minute, striking from close range off a pass down the left flank from M. Ramesh. Kerala equalised three minutes later though, as Herry Simon toed in a corner kick by Ratheesh. S. Santhosh Kumar produced the winner for Annamalai in the 60th minute, his 20-yard lob kissing the top of the net. Later, Nisthar Ali scored Calicut's both goals, in the 41st minute and then in the injury time in the second half, as he beat Bangalore's off-side trap on both the occasions.
