Swapan Sadhan in `Club Task Force'

By Our Sports Reporter

KOLKATA, OCT. 18. The president of the more-than-a-century-old football club Mohun Bagan AC, Swapan Sadhan (Tutu) Bose, is among the two Asian club representatives appointed for the `Club Task Force' constituted by the sport's world governing body — FIFA.

Mr. Bose joins the president of the Japanese giant Jubilo Iwata, Takanori Matsuzaki, who is the other Asian name in the 11-member body.

The `Club Task Force' is not an official committee but is conceived by FIFA as a platform for clubs from all confederations to express their views and concerns in an informal gathering. It has been constituted to "confirm that FIFA recognises the existence and importance of the clubs within the game,'' stated a fax from the world body to the Indian federation — AIFF.

Interestingly, there is another Indian name in the list and that is of Mr. Sunil Gulati, who as the president of the New England Revolution of United States of America, is representing the only club from the CONCACAF. The first meeting of the FIFA Club Task Force will be held in Zurich on December 17.

The club task force (clubs segmented under continental bodies):

UEFA: FC Barcelona (Spain) — Mr. Joan Laporta; FC Bayern Munich (Germany) — Mr. Franz Backenbaur; Ipswich Town FC (England) — Mr. David R. Sheepshanks.

CONMEBOL: Club River Plate (Argentina) — Mr. Jose Maria Aguilar; Palmeiras de Sao Paulo (Brazil) — Mr. Mustafa Contursi.

AFC: Mohun Bagan AC (India) — Mr. Swapan Sadhan Bose; Jubilo Iwata (Japan) — Takanori Matsuzaki.

CAF: Etoile Sportive du Sahel (Tunisia) — Mr. Othman Jenaleh; ASEC Mimosas Omnisports (Cote d'Ivoire) — Mr. Roger Ouegnin.

CONCACAF: New England Revolution (USA) — Mr. Sunil Gulati.

OFC: Perth Glory Club (Australia) — Mr. Nick Tana.
