Rs.2.21-crore target for Kanyakumari district

NAGERCOIL, OCT.18. The Government has fixed Rs.2.21-cr. sales target for handloom products for the Deepavali season, the Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, said.

Inaugurating Deepavali sale at Kumari Co-optex Showroom here on Monday he said handloom products worth Rs.1.57 crores were sold in the last Deepavali season. The Co-optex was marketing handloom products produced by primary weavers co-operative societies through its 300 outlets situated all over the country controlled by 14 regional offices with a view to giving employment to weavers.

The Government had announced a rebate for cotton and silk varieties and 20 to 50 per cent discount on certain selected varieties. Co-optex was extending credit facility to the Government staff, people working under public sector undertakings and schools and colleges for purchasing handloom products.

The Collector appealed to all section of the people to buy only handloom products to uplift the socio-economic status of weavers.The senior manager of co-optex, Amirthalingam, said there were four showrooms in Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Marthandam and Thuckalay.

The office had received fresh stocks for about Rs.4 crores. All four showrooms had an adequate stock of Kovai cotton, Kora silk, Tusser silk- mixed sarees, cotton zari sarees and other items to cater to the need and choice of customers.

Tuticorin

Co-optex should initiate measures to extend more credit facilities to women self-help group members for purchasing handloom clothes, the Tuticorin Collector, V. Chandrasekharan, said today.

Inaugurating the first sale of the Co-optex Deepavali discount sale in Tuticorin district here, he said during the Deepavali season, people could avail themselves of 20 per cent rebate on cotton and silk varieties at co-optex fairs as announced by the government.

``Apart from that, people can get a discount of 20 to 50 per cent on selected items,'' he added.

The discount sales are available at five Co-optex centres — Tuticorin, Kovilpatti, Tiruchendur, Nazareth and Muthunagar.
