MADRID, OCT. 18. Alex Corretja of Spain cruised to an untroubled win over David Ferrer of Spain 7-5, 6-1 on the opening day of the Madrid Masters tennis tournament on Monday. Earlier, Robin Soderling of Sweden defeated Germany's Florian Mayer in straight sets in the opening match of the event. Soderling won 6-3, 7-6(2). In another match, Luis Horna of Peru defeated Hicham Arazi of Morocco 6-4, 7-5. Robby Ginepri of the United States beat Juan Luis Tati Rascon of Spain 6-1, 6-4 and Stefan Koubek of Austria got the better of the Netherlands' Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 6-4.
Hantuchova advances
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia defeated Russian wild card Vera Douchevina 6-1, 6-4 in the opening round of the $1.3 million Swisscom Challenge in Zurich. Hantuchova will meet third-seeded Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova of Russia in the next round. The 17-year-old arrived in Zurich having won nine consecutive matches and back-to-back titles in Seoul and Tokyo.
