P.I. Rajender
HYDERABAD, OCT. 18. Risking his life, a constable chased a knife-wielding robber, forcing the latter to beat a fast retreat abandoning the Rs. 5 lakhs he was fleeing with on Abids main road on Monday. P.I. Rajender Kumar, of Central Armed Reserve, on deputation with Anti-Corruption Bureau, was standing at a bus-stop opposite Ramakrishna theatre when he saw a person running with a bag. Even as he was wondering as to what the man was up to, the latter whipped out a knife scaring passers-by not to intercept him.
Filmi chase
"Then I realised that something was wrong and ran after him," recalled Kumar. With the thief running along the side of the theatre and the cop on the other side of the road, a chase reminiscent of a Bollywood potboiler began. Rajender Kumar finally caught up with the thief at Troupbazar lane and confronted him with an iron rod taken from a roadside cobbler. The thief dropped the cash bag and fled the spot . "I saw the cash inside the bag and realised that it was a major offence," Kumar said. Rajender boarded a bus, walked into Abids police station and handed over the cash to the Inspector, G. Vasusena, who conveyed the constable's daring effort to higher-ups. Meanwhile, Goverdhan Vyas, worker of a commission agent from whom the offender had snatched the cash bag, reached the police station and narrated what happened.
Chilli trick
On the instructions of his master, A. Suresh Kumar, Vyas had withdrawn Rs. 5 lakhs from Jammu and Kashmir bank, Abids branch. He was putting the cash bag inside the scooter's sidebox at the cellar when the unidentified offender threw chilli powder on his face and snatched the bag.
Cash prize
The Hyderabad Police Commissioner, R.P. Singh and Central Zone DCP, B. Sreenivasulu, lauded Kumar. While the police chief gave away a cash reward of Rs. 5,000, the commission agent too, profusely thanking Rajender Kumar, handed over Rs. 11,000 to him.
