Grid station fire plunges Valley in darkness
By Shujaat Bukhari
SRINAGAR,
OCT. 19.
The Kashmir Valley is facing its worst ever crisis on the power front following major damage to a grid station at Zainakot on Monday. The station, along with a number of buildings, was set ablaze by an irate mob after a live wire fell on a school killing two children and injuring seven.
The whole of north Kashmir and central Budgam district has been without electricity since last evening. As the law and order situation eased today, the Power Development Department officials visited the site to assess the damage. The Secretary, Power, Basharat Ahmed Dhar, told The Hindu that every effort was being made to restore the supply.
The Minister for Power, Mohammad Sharief Niaz, has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The education department had asked the PDD to remove the service line from the school area earlier, and the Deputy Commissioner of Budgam had passed the necessary orders. However, nothing had been done till it fell on the children.
