Plea for NH

Sir - It is heartening to learn that Erode Municipality is being upgraded into a Corporation, which will help in its all-round development. To link Erode better, the State Highway from Sankagiri to Perundurai via Erode must be made a National Highway as there is large volume of traffic on these highways to Salem and Coimbatore.

N. Vasanthi,

Erode.

Rash driving

Sir - Auto drivers have become a cause of worry in Coimbatore city. Invariably, they are drunk and drive recklessly. It is a nightmare for schoolchildren. A strict check by the traffic police and Regional Transport officials would make auto journey safe for the public.

G.E.M. Manoharan,

Coimbatore.

No stoppage

Sir - This is with reference to the news item `More trains to stop at Tirupur' that appeared on October 8, 2004. On a closer look at the list, one will be surprised to note that all these trains already have stoppages at Tirupur! Passengers were asking for a stoppage for West Coast Express at Tirupur and requesting that it run through Coimbatore.

N. Balasubramanian,

Coimbatore.

Change cable

Sir - The telephone cable in Sri Ambal Nagar was laid during 1989-1990. The area comes under Saravanampatti exchange. At present whenever I make or receive calls the voice is inaudible at both ends. I enquired with other locals, residents of Cheran Maanagar and STD booths and found that this was a common problem.

A technical staff of BSNL in the rank of an Assistant Engineer said that this problem could be due to the total energy lost in the telephone cable. Therefore, in the interest of the residents of Sri Ambal Nagar and areas like Cheran Maanagar,

I request the authorities concerned to look into this matter.

N.R. Ravisankar,

Coimbatore.

Of no relevance

Sir - This is with reference to the article `Teaching tribals to tee off' on October 11. The article is insensitive to the ethos of Todas. Toda hamlets known as `munds' in Toda language are located in bright and picturesque grasslands usually on the upper plateau of the hills and not necessarily in the "inner recesses" as reported.

Wenlock Downs, which is used as the golf links, is the abode of the Todas. Golf is basically meant for the rich who have leisure time at their disposal. It is only hoped that the gentle Toda boys do not end up as caddies to the rich golfers.

B.J. Krishnan,

Udhagamandalam.

Telephone woes

Sir - Many times when I use ITC (India Telephone Card) to make STD calls, I am not able to get the line. After wasting half to one hour trying to call my relatives in Bangalore and Tuticorin, I to go to the STD booth. Further, the toll-free service (No 1600442001) can never be reached or is never picked up! Will the authorities concerned look into the matter?

J.S. Priscilla,

Valparai.

Filth everywhere

Sir - Coimbatore is getting filthier by the day. Littered garbage, plastic bags, damaged electric posts and the likes of it can be seen throughout the city. Slush dug up from the drains lining the road compounds the problem.

JCBs should be used to immediately remove the slush.

Mrs. Janarthanan,

Coimbatore.
