VISAKHAPATNAM, OCT. 19. Cargo handling private pool workers took out a rally in the port area on Tuesday and staged a dharna in front of Karmika Jyothi Bhavan demanding consideration of their demands by the special board meeting of the Dock Labour Board (DLB). According to the Visakhapatnam Harbour and Port Workers' Union (VHPWU) general secretary, B.Ch. Masen, the meeting unanimously resolved to endorse a comprehensive audit of accounts for the cargo-handling private pool workers and recast the managing committee to include representatives from the administration of the port and labour unions. It also resolved to spend the entire levy transferred from the DLB to the cargo handling private pool for the welfare of the workers. Mr. Masen said progress with regard to implementation of these demands would be placed before the board meeting of the DLB slated on October 26.
Workers' welfare
Earlier, addressing the protesters at the dharna, the VHPWU honorary president, V.V. Rama Rao, said DLB authorities should ensure funds being transferred from the DLB to the cargo handling pool spent exclusively towards the welfare of the poor workers and their families. Demanding benefits and welfare measures to the private pool workers on par with the DLB workers, he said proper representation of the trade unions and the stevedores' association in the managing committee would help regulate the functioning of the private workers pool.
