Expedite Vaigai reclamation works says, Speaker

MADURAI, OCT.19. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, today directed the Public Works Department officials to expedite the Vaigai river reclamation works and ensure they were completed by March 2005.

Chairing a meeting of the Vaigai River Association Administrative Committee here, the Speaker said the Vaigai river Reclamation project was being implemented under the National River Conservation Project on an outlay of Rs.8 crores, including Rs.2 crore contribution from the members of the public.

He reviewed the pace of works. Rs.1.59-crore worth works, including laying of road on the banks of the Vaigai from Obula Padithurai to the Anna Nagar bridge and from a cinema hall to Palam Station, and works related to filling up of rock boulders in the inclined parts of the river bunds, were progressing at present.

The Mayor, H. Ramachandran, handed over a cheque for Rs.13 lakh, which was the contribution by the public, to the Speaker on the occasion. The Corporation Commissioner, A. Karthik, and the MLAs, Valarmathy Jebraj, A. Hakkim, S.M. Seenivel and N. Nanmaran, were among those who participated in the meeting.
