THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, OCT. 19. The Trivandrum Airport Taxi Drivers Welfare Association has opposed the move to introduce `rent-a-car' system at the Thiruvananthapuram international airport. A resolution passed at the 17th meeting of the association held here said that the association will be forced to launch an agitation against the move of the airport authorities to entrust the taxi service from the airport to private parties in a phased manner. When it had been scrapped in other airports in the country, the authorities of the international airport here had invited tenders to introduce the system, the association said. It was pointed out that 348 taxi drivers were now attached to the airport taxi service being operated as per the Memorandum of Settlement reached with the Airports Authority of India on the basis of a High Court directive. "The authorities are trying to bypass the memorandum of settlement of October 17, 1988 and trying to introduce rent-a-car. The taxi drivers, who have been working in the airport since 1979, will be rendered jobless if the new system is introduced", the resolution said. It would only help the underworld and criminals, as they would be able to hire a car and indulge in anti-social activities, it was pointed out.
