KURNOOL, OCT. 19. The landless poor at Sivapuram village of Kothapalli mandal in Kurnool district occupied 350 acres of forest land and began agriculture operations on Tuesday. The farmers were said to have the support of the Bhavanasi dalam of the CPI (Maoist). According to reports, the farmers cultivated the land for several years until they were evicted by the Forest Department four years ago who planted trees. But none of the trees survived. Earlier, the farmers raised rain-fed crops after the land was cleared of bamboo plantations by contractors. After a gap of four years, the farmers cleared bushes and ploughed the land. Out of 500 acres of forest land, 150 acres is not fit for cultivation where check-dams and other structures have come up.
