SINGAPORE, OCT. 20. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Indonesia's first President to be elected directly by the people, was today sworn in even as his predecessor and one-time political leader, Megawati Sukarnoputri, conspicuously refrained from attending the ceremony in Jakarta. Mr. Susilo, formerly a military leader and later political activist with a "reform agenda" in respect of both economic and constitutional issues, defeated Ms. Megawati in the recent presidential run-off by an overwhelming margin. Both qualified for the run-off. Mr. Susilo today outlined his priorities as the battle against corruption and efforts at ensuring peace and security across Indonesia in the context of the separatist violence in Aceh and Papua (Irian Jaya) provinces. As a former Coordinating Minister for Security and Political Affairs, Mr. Susilo has set himself the task of addressing domestic and international terrorism also. Three major terrorist strikes, suspected to be linked in some way or other to a regional affiliate of the Al-Qaeda, have rocked the country in just over two years.
