BAGHDAD, OCT. 20. The highest-ranking soldier charged in the Abu Ghraib scandal pleaded guilty on Wednesday to five charges of abusing Iraqi detenus at the prison as a two-day court-martial opened at a U.S. base in Baghdad. U.S. Army reservist Staff Sgt. Ivan `Chip' Frederick (38) admitted to allegations of conspiracy, dereliction of duty, maltreatment of detenus, assault, and committing an indecent act. He was expected to be sentenced on Thursday. Under the plea bargain deal, several other charges against Sgt. Frederick were dropped, according to his attorney Gary Myers. Sgt. Frederick has agreed to fully cooperate in future investigations and courts martial, and will testify in future trials. AP
