MALLORCA, OCT. 20. Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly defeated Erik Van Den Doel of the Netherlands in the sixth round of the 36th Chess Olympiad here on Wednesday. Ganguly's win helped Indian men get an early lead against the Netherlands in the last game before the rest day. Infact, Doel proved no match for Ganguly. But middle game was intense after Ganguly sacrificed a pawn early and got initiative with precise play. But Ganguly was able to maintain his advantage. The Dutchman had no chance once his Bishop was trapped and played till the 30th move before calling it a day. On the second board, Krishnan Sasikiran drew with Sergei Tiviakov from the black side of a Sicilian game. Tiviakov employed the Alapin variation and got a slightly better position after Sasikiran avoided the main lines. The middle game took shape with Tiviakov fighting to improve his advantage. But Sasikiran, though cornered, kept his nerves and found the best resources to develop his pieces. Both agreed for draw after 28 moves. Indian results: Sixth round: Men (vs. Netherlands): S. S. Ganguly bt Erik Van Den Doel; K. Sasikiran drew with Sergei Tiviakov. Fifth round: Men (vs. Armenia): Levon Aronia drew with V. Anand; K.
