Naxals' stand on arms irks YSR

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, OCT. 20. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Wednesday expressed unhappiness at the CPI (Maoist) and the CPI (ML) Janashakti's hesitation to lay down arms.

Addressing a press conference, Dr. Reddy said the extremist groups had stuck to their stand not heeding to the repeated appeals made by the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, to leave arms. Commenting on the talks with these groups, the Chief Minister said they had ventilated certain problems and the Government was in the process of examining them.

Notwithstanding certain flaws that could be corrected, democratic system was the best bet and the naxalite groups need to appreciate it, he said. "If we do not stick to democracy, it leads to anarchy, which is much more dangerous," he added.

Asked to comment on the 45 representations pertaining to employees' grievances being presented to naxalite leaders, he said the other sections having problems did the same. Some people go to Court to get their grievances settled, even if it was delayed. Village panchayats used to settle some of the disputes till they developed vested interests.

On the naxalites' demand for on appointment of a commission to study land distribution, Dr. Reddy said the State Cabinet would discuss it and take a decision. Referring to the occupation of land by the extremist groups in Anantapur district, he said if the reports were true, it was not correct. "We have to set it right."
