Nellore
By Our Staff Reporter
NELLORE, OCT.20. After a marathon discussion spreading over more than three hours, the Irrigation Advisory Board (IAB) meeting held here at the Golden Jubilee Hall on Wednesday passed a resolution promising supply of water to an extent of 2.75 lakh acres, towards transplantation in Nellore district. Its other resolutions were to release an extent of 6.26 tmcft of water for this purpose and to utilise the left-over amounts of earlier Janmabhoomi and decentalised funds to an extent of Rs. 4 crores, towards repairs of canals. The water supply is supposed to be from November 1. However a request has been made by some MLAs, that the water can be released directly to canals from October 25 and for the rest from November 1. The entire process is to be spread over a period of 30 days and a request for extending it to 40 days, was not favourably considered by officials. The discussion as usual brought out the cleavages between the MLAs, belonging to delta and non-delta areas, with each one of them indirectly expressing the opinion that the other one was trying to extricate more quantity of water.
Ryots present
A large number of farmers were present outside the meeting venue, expecting some positive measures. Some members who obviously came well prepared, started analysing the water availability position and suggesting alternative measures. The Rapur MLA, A. Ramanarayana Reddy, pointed that even with availability of about 22 tmcft of water in Somasila, the supply to farmers can be optimistic.
Encroachers warned
The district Collector, B. Rajsekhar, warned encroachers of stern action and said the vulnerable points in the town were already identified for immediate removal. Winding up the Irrigation Advisory Board proceedings, the official Collector referred to the growing menace of encroachments, even on irrigation canals. He said penal action would be taken against offenders.
