NEW DELHI, OCT. 20. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs today gave its approval for promulgating a `Marine Fishing Policy, 2004', which would augment marine fish production of the country to sustainable levels for giving a boost to sea food exports and increase per capita fish protein intake of people. The policy would be formulated as to ensure the socio-economic security of artisanal fishermen whose livelihood depended solely on this vocation and to ensure sustainable development of marine fisheries with due concern for ecological integrity and biodiversity. The CCEA also cleared the setting up of an `Empowered Committee on Marine Fisheries' with the Secretary in the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying as the chairperson. Members from the concerned Ministries, Departments and Institutions would be on the committee. The CCEA gave its nod for formulation of `appropriate' legal framework for regulating marine fishing operations in Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by all classes of vessels and for all round development of fisheries in Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
