BEIJING, OCT. 20. The long hunt for forest brigand Veerappan has left many a Chinese puzzled. ``Why did India take such a long time to capture Veerappan,'' is a question many had been asking after the Chinese media today widely reported the Veerappan killing. ``I was shocked after I read that the man with a huge moustache had killed over 100 people. He should have been captured long back,'' said Wang Wei, a newspaper vendor. Many newspapers, including The China Daily and The Beijing Youth Daily had extensive coverage on the killing, with the latter devoting half a page for the news and had colour photographs of the dead bandit. A college student, Li, said he could not understand how a man with a handlebar moustache can elude the law for such a long time. A government employee, Zhang Hua, wondered why the exploits of a sandalwood bandit went unchecked for so many years. PTI
