Chennai airport's porous security exposed

By T.S. Shankar

CHENNAI, OCT. 20. Preliminary investigation by Central Intelligence into a bid to smuggle fire crackers to Kuwait with the connivance of two Kuwait Airways officials on October 12 has revealed that it was done for "monetary consideration".

While the Airports Authority of India (AAI), custodian of the terminal building, has taken a serious view of the incident, airport sources detailing the sequence of events said it once again brought to focus the porous security at the Anna International Terminal (AIT).

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) authorities (under whom the airport security control rests) claimed that they have tightened security, but the recent incident has exposed the laxity on their part.

The ease with which over 200 kg of fire crackers were smuggled into the passenger concourse area in spite of high quality surveillance cameras operating at all vantage points and monitored by a team of officials has increased security concerns.

Airport sources told The Hindu that the preliminary probe conducted by the AAI and Central Intelligence officials revealed the "direct involvement" of two Kuwait Airways officials.

Confessions recorded from both the senior officials, now under arrest, have apparently convinced the investigators that there was a plan to smuggle five bags containing objectionable fire crackers without pre-security clearance.

The incident came to light when there was an altercation between the staff of Kuwait Airways and Air India, which was noticed by the CISF personnel, who questioned them. The personnel found that the bags, which had not been subjected to scanning, contained fire crackers. They were about to be put on the conveyor belt and air lifted to Kuwait for Deepavali.
