ELURU, OCT. 20. CPI-ML-Janashakti (KR group) activists on Wednesday led an attack on the house of a mandal-level leader of the ruling Congress in the T. Narasapur area in West Godavari district in the backdrop of the naxal-Government peace talks. Armed with spears, bows and sticks, an angry mob of 200 tribals reportedly assaulted the T. Narasapur Mandal Congress Committee president, Sirimella Babu Chennakesava Rao, his brother, Satyanarayana, and supporter, Matta Arjaiah, at Makkenavarigudem with the support of the Janashakti group. They burnt down a Tata Sumo and a motor cycle. The attack lasted an hour from 8-30 am. Tribals from Marrigudem, Kollivarigudem, Sangaraopet, Gangineedupalem and Gattugudem were said to have participated in the attack. A posse of policemen deployed from Armed Reserve in Eluru and from Jeelugumilli, Chintalapudi and T. Narasapur police stations dispersed the mob and saved Mr. Babu Rao. The attack was a sequel to the detention of a sympathiser of the Janashakti group, Kinnera Pullaiah, last night by the Congress leader in his house. K. Narasimhamurthy, SP, said a case would be registered against the Congress leader for detaining a Janashakti worker while similar action would be initiated against the tribals and their leaders for assaulting the Congress leader.
