MADURAI, OCT.20. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, on Tuesday urged teachers to create a sense of love for Tamil language among students in the larger interests of the State. He said the language attained a special status after it had been declared a classical language by the Union Government recently "and the next step is to make it an official language of the country." Participating in the `Teachers Day' celebrations, organised by the district administration and the Education department here, Mr. Kalimuthu said that efforts would be taken to get the official language status for Tamil. He said a teacher might be teaching any subject, be it science or social studies, but the love for Tamil need not be given up. Citing instances, Mr. Kalimuthu said that he was surprised to see a `Tamil Sangam' in San Francisco, Washington and New York where "the Tamil people are actively involved in language activities and have an immense love for Tamil." Calling upon the teachers to shape the students with a good character, behaviour and humaneness, the Speaker said that without these qualities, their education would be useless. The Collector, D. Raajendiran, in his presidential address, said the examination results of Plus Two and SSLC in Madurai district had been good though there was a scope for improvement. In 2004-04, the higher secondary pass per centage was 85 while it was 82.5 the previous year. In the SSLC public examinations, the district stood fifth in the State with nearly 70 per cent passes, he added. Valarmathi Jebaraj, MLA, Madurai West, and the Madurai East MLA, N. Nanmaran, offered felicitations. R. Pitchai, Chief Educational Officer, welcomed the gathering and P. Vishnu Prasad, District Educational Officer (in charge), Usilampatti, proposed a vote of thanks. Earlier, the Speaker presented shawls and mementoes to teachers, who had been honoured by the Education department.
