Light to moderate rainfall forecast

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, OCT. 20. The Meteorological Centre here has forecast scattered — light to moderate — rainfall over the southern districts of the State up to October 31.

According to Anand L. Koppar, Director of the Department of Meteorology, here on Wednesday, there is a trough of low pressure over the south-west bay off the Tamil Nadu Coast. Similarly, there is a trough of low pressure over south-east Arabian Sea off the Kerala and Karnataka coast. Under the influence of these, rainfall has been occurring over the southern parts of south interior and south coastal Karnataka.

Bangalore will remain partly cloudy with rain and thundershowers in the evening and night. It will witness a normal winter for two months (December and January), according to Prof. Koppar.

For the past couple of months, Bangalore has been having a damp weather. The rainfall from January 2004 has been 1,080 mm (above normal). With the north-east monsoon setting in, moisture feeding winds from the eastern side has facilitated rainfall in certain places.

The city has recorded an average rainfall of 143.3 mm (maximum) as against an average of 180.44 mm, which is recorded normally in October.

Rainfall is expected to cross this mark sooner or later. The number of rainy days normally recorded this month was nine and so far, this has had eight rainy days.

"Rainfall has been considerably good this year," says Prof. Koppar.
