MADIKERI, OCT. 21. The Kodagu District Land Owners' Association on Thursday threatened to prevent the auction of timber in government depots in Kodagu from October 25 to 29 if their demands were not met. In a press release issued here, the landowners alleged that the Forest Department had not given them the proceeds from the sale of timber deposited by them in the depots in the past two years. They demanded that the department release their share immediately as they were in difficulty owing to poor coffee prices.

P.L. Budihal, Chief Executive Officer of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat, who holds the additional charge of Conservator of Forests, Kodagu Circle, said: "We will try to convince the landowners not to block the auctions." He was yet to receive communication from the association in this regard. He said the issue of tree rights issue would have to be settled by the State Government and not the department. "We will ask them not to disturb the auction in the depots since more than 75 per cent of the timber lying in the depots belong to the farmers."
