DAVANGERE, OCT. 21. A police constable, who allegedly tried to rape an adolescent girl on Wednesday night at Jagalur, was arrested. A large number of citizens of Jagalur staged a dharna and gheraoed the senior police officials at the Jagalur Police Station and demanded that the constable be arrested. They also raised slogans against the police. According to the police, Hanumanthappa, constable, stopped the girl who was returning from a flourmill in KEB quarters and dragged her to a nearby bush. He then tied her hands and covered her mouth with some clothing. A few persons, who happened to pass by, noticed the constable dragging the girl. They rescued the girl and handed the constable over to the police. The people, who had assembled at the station, became restive when the police were dilly-dallying to register the case against Hanumanthappa. The Superintendent of Police, Alok Kumar, who was informed about the incident, instructed the police officials to book a case against the constable and arrest him. The constable was produced before the Magistrate, who remanded him (the constable) in judicial custody. The Police said that Hanumanthappa had been working in the department for the past three years.
